Chiang Mai Attractions

The museum was originally the residence of Chao Dara Rasmi, a princess of the northern Lanna Kingdom, and one of the favourite consorts of King Chulalongkorn, (King Rama V).

 

A “Khum” is a traditional house of Thai royalty from the northern region, and “Chao Burirat” refers to one of the highest levels of government office in the political system of Chiang Mai from 1774 to 1932. The architecture of the house derived from a combination of traditional and colonial designs.

 

Located at the foot of Doi Suthep, the monument was built in 1935 to honor Khruba Siwichai a famous Lanna monk who initiated construction of the road leading up to Phra That Doi Suthep.

 

The city pillar was built when the founder of Chiang Mai, King Meng Rai, ruled the city in 1296

 

Built before reign of King Meng Rai, this ancient walled city can be dated back to the Hariphunchai period. During excavations, sandstone and earthen Buddha images, earthen amulets, brown jars with bones and Chinese porcelains from the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368) were found in the area. Don't miss out on a chance to visit the well preserved ruins the pagoda and the foundations of the Vihan, which are constructed from bricks and laterite.

 

This ancient city was recently discovered and is believed to have been built during the reign of King Meng Rai in 1286. There are more than 20 ancient ruins inside and around Wiang Kum Kam including Wat Chedi Liam, Wat Chang Kham, Wat Noi, Wat Pu Pia, Wat Ku Koa, Wat E Kang, Wat Hua Nong, and Wat Pu Song.

 

This plantation has been established for over 20 years and is famous for breeding a variety of species of orchids using appropriate technology.

 

Orchid and Butterfly Farms are along the route. Visitors can enjoy exotic year-round blooms. These farms also have special butterfly enclosures where tropical species can be seen in a natural environment. 

 

Established to honor Queen Sirikit in 1992, the international botanical garden has a wide and varied collection of Thai and foreign plants on display, and also offers 3 walking trails.

 

The garden is situated within a lush mountain landscape and showcases many plant and flower species. In addition, there are also delicately, unique artworks and architecture to be appreciated.

 

Having one of the largest plant collections in Thailand, the garden was established in 1997.

 

Wualai Walking Street (Saturday Market) is known for good quality silver and lacquer wares. There is a variety of local foods to be enjoyed and traditional Tha performances to be seen. On Saturday evenings, the open-air market will be set up for the famous handicraft area. Tha Pae Walking Street (Sunday Market) has a variety of local products.

 

This is a shopping haven there are many handmade products and souvenirs from many Chiang Mai villages and hill tribes.

 

The market seems to be ever expanding down more streets and alleys leading off the central road.

 

Well-known for its high quality, traditionally woven cotton.

 

The centre showcases a collection of Lanna art and traditional northern culture.

 

The cultural center was created to help them understand their roots and foster a sense of pride in local identity and thus to help preserve the beauty of local customs and culture.

This is a beautiful landscaped garden with variety of tropical trees and exquisite flowers on display.

 

The lake offers many recreational activities during the rainy and cool seasons, such as rafting and cruises to Bhumibol Dam.

The hot springs originate from simmering granite and is most notable for the largest spring which constantly jets out strong sulphur-scented steam.

 

The water at this particular hot springs has a high sulphur content and possesses curative and restorative properties. 

 

Inside the zoo, there are over 200 types of Asian and African mammals and birds. The zoo is also home to a pair of Pandas.

 

This was established as an evening and night tourist attraction.

 

It is home to various kinds of snakes that are native to Thailand. The farm provides 30-minute snake shows daily.

Chiang Mai Museums

The museum contains contemporary art and rare ancient objects from the Ban Chiang Era (dating back 5000 years).  Also on displays are antique furniture such as tables, chairs, mirrors, and carved Chinese-style beds from the Ching Dynasty.

This is the largest textile museum in Thailand and is situated at Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center.

 

Chiang Mai National Parks

This national park is located on Doi Inthanon, which is Thailand's highest mountain measuing at 2,565 metres above sea level. The park is comprised of the largest tract of upper mountain forest, ranging across Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and ends in the northern part of Thaila. The moist and dense evergreen forest is abundant with lichens and wild orchids, as well as intriguing bird life.

 

The park is home to more than 300 bird species and nearly 2,000 species of ferns and flowering plants.

 

Having a cool climate throughout the year, visitors can explore the Royal Angkhang Station Project and visit hill tribe villages.

 

The mountain has rich forests that are the source of tributaries and streams in the area. Some significant attractions in the park include Huai Nam Dang Viewpoint and Doi Kiu Lom, which overlook Doi Chiang Dao.

Chiang Mai Activities

Established in 2004 by Mr. Chanrat ‘Air’ Karatna, the kitchen classroom of Air’s Thai Culinary Kitchen is surrounded by herb and spice gardens, which are used during the course of the classes.

 

Chiang Mai is an important bird watching destination. Doi Inthanon forms the southern end of the Himalayan range and is home to approximately 364 species of birds, many of which are not seen elsewhere in the country. During the period from November to February is the best time for bird watching.

 

The school offers one, two- or three-day cooking classes in English. Classes include northern-style lunch, where students will learn the etiquette of eating at the unique khan toke table.

 

There are 2 scenic routes that start from Doi Inthanon and end at Ob Luang George, but will go via Mae Chaem. The first route is approximately 20 kilometres and is strictly for experienced mountain bikers. While the second route, which 30 kilometre long, is more suited for bikers of intermediate skills and higher.

 

There are 3 program options available which can comprise of various activities, such as sight-seeing, elephant shows and treks, as well as the opportunity to fly in a single-propeller plane that will take you over city regions of Chiang Mai.

 

There are many walking trails located throughout Chiang Mai, but perhaps some of the best trails are found in Doi Inthanon National Park. Here there are more than 360 bird species, as well as butterflies, wildlife, orchids and other distinct flora. The Army Pack Division Headquarters in Mae Rim District offers several activities, such as camping trips, horseback riding and basic jungle survival skills training.

 

There are two options available for whitewater rafting. The first travels from Mae Chaem through to Ob Luang George. The second option is a challenging route from Mae Tuen in Omkoi District, going through virgin forests and ends at the Pha Dam Waterfall.
